Kankara (An Empty Tin Can) 2002

The Jan-Jan district is an old working class district near Tennoji in Osaka where Ishinha is based. The show, “Jan-Jan Opera” depicts the essence of daily life of this high-spirited neighborhood. A major feature of the show is its use of language. Instead of using standard Japanese, “Jan-Jan Opera” employs the language and intonation of this area of Osaka. In this way the language becomes more musical and true to its setting. One may think that this use of dialect may make the performance more difficult to understand, but on the contrary, by using language more as music than as dry text, the core expression comes through more clearly to Japanese and non Japanese speakers alike. In essence, we have created a new kind of opera using “Osaka Rap”, which has the living, vibrant sound that is true to the pulse of modern urban life.
